Botany and medicinal herbs
A section to introduce you to the medicinal plants we most often find in our area.
Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis
A Mediterranean shrub of the mint family (Lamiaceae), well known for its uses in cooking and traditional medicine. In Catalan it is called romaní or romer. Its leaves have glands with essential oils that give it a strong, fresh scent: a great seasoning in Mediterranean cooking.
Thyme Thymus vulgaris
A small shrub of the mint family (Labiatae). In Catalan it is called farigola in the east, timó in the west, tomello in the Valencia region and frígola in the Balearic Islands. It is widely used as a seasoning; the flowering tops, once dried, are used as a remedy.
Shrubby globularia (foixarda) Globularia alypum
A small shrub up to 60 cm tall that grows in sunny spots, open woodland and dry scrubland, always on limestone soils. It is very common in our municipality but scarce in the Pyrenees. A medicinal plant used against high blood pressure.
Lavender Lavandula angustifolia
A member of the mint family (Labiatae). The name comes from “lavo”, meaning to purify. A perennial plant with narrow, pointed leaves and small bluish flowers that form a kind of low spike. It flowers in summer.
